Movie Review: Manjal Veyil
Cast: Prasanna, Sandhya, Bala, RK, MS Bhaskar, Nizhalgal Ravi
Music: Bharadwaj
Directed by: Vaseegaran
Director Vaseegaran shows Rajesh (Prasanna) and Gayathri (Sandhya), close pals, running away from home, when Gayathri’s parents force her to marry RK, who was supposedly the bride groom of Gayathri’s elder sister. RK, who falls for Gayathri, plays some dirty trick to avoid her sister and creates a situation where the parents of the girls come forward to marry the younger one to him.
But Gayathri has other plans and of course desires. She runs away with Rajesh but they don’t get married even after they reach a safe place after some gravity defying fights and lot of traveling. Director brings a twist in the tale. Both of them start searching for Bala, an artist, who is Gayathri’s lover. Yes. Rajesh is just her best friend and not lover.
Rajesh tries hard and finds Bala in a bizarre situation. Later, he saves Bala’s life at the risk of his own life. Gayathri, however, refuses to accept his sacrifice and she comes forward to sacrifice her love to save his friend. The climax tells you whose sacrifice wins.
Mr. Vaseegaran, please be reminded that we have had enough of friendship - love – sacrifice drama. Keeping the friendship angle as suspense by making them look like lovers till the interval point is not a clever idea to say the least. If they are not lovers, then why the hell they sing a duet and move physically close to each other?
The director could not come up with fresh ideas to depict the friendship and the love. The drama that takes place in the marriage atmosphere too looks childish. So is the case with the so called twists. The characterization and the casting of the villain (RK) are horrible. The movie has no interesting scenes or lovable characters and hence leaves the viewers disenchanted. The film suffers from poor execution as well.
Prasanna and Sandhya fail to impress. They suffer from poor characterization. Bala is clueless and he looks funny while emoting. Bhaskar’s comedy lacks imagination. Bharadwaj’s music is a poor shadow of his past tracks.
Manjal Veyil, in short, is a tiring experience.
