What's it about!
The film is about two broken hearts finding about their partner in life.
Sri Ram (Sumanth), a wannabe politician, tries to get his childhood love and niece Raji (Neetu Chandra). But Raji's father and Ram's uncle arranges and fixes marriages with an IPS officer Ravinder (Kamal Kamaraju). As the wedding is arranged in Bhadrachalam, the entire family leaves for the place on a boat from Rajamundry. Seeta (Kamalini) wants to prove herself as entrepreneur also lands in the boat. How the broken heart Sri Ram finds his 'love' in Seeta during the journey is the rest of the film.
What's hot!
The film is breezy romantic entertainer. Its theme is very simple but the way the film told in the picturesque backdrop of Godavari is really good. What makes the film very interesting is the director Shekar Kammula's engrossing screenplay laced with witty dialogues and right twists. Actually it is more about two different persons finding their love than the Godavari, the river. He has just used the river as the backdrop to proceed this 'love story'. Though 90 percent of the film happens on the riverboat named Godavari and moves on the exotic river passage through Papikondalu, it is the romance between hero Sumanth and Kamalini and their characterization entices more.
Also the cinematography is really excellent. Vijay C Kumar has captured the beauty of Papikondalu and Godavari river very well.
Performances
Sumanth's subdued performance is highlight of the film. Godavari is remarkable departure for him from his regular films. Perhaps, the character of Sriram is very real to his off screen personality. And he has shown maturity in his performance - he talks less and conveys through his expressions. That is good sign of evolving as actor. Shekar Kammula's muse Kamalini Mukharjee has done neat job. She gets more footage and character has enough scope to perform. She has done justice to her role but her expressions resemble to what she did in Anand. It is the other actress, Neetu Chandra, who steals the show. Though her looks are not that great shake but her acting skills are worth raving about it. She has expressive eyes and has come up with a good performance. Of the rest of the cast, a child artiste who accompanies the hero is good. There is not much to talk about others.
What's not!
The biggest problem in the film is it is very slow paced. Like the river boat, it moves at snail pace and particularly in the second half of the film. Director Shekar should realize that today's youth don't have patience to watch the slow proceedings. Hope he takes care of this in his next film. And this kind of romantic entertainers need excellent musical score and re-recoding work. Godavari lacks both. Though some of the songs like "Nenu Andamga leana.." are okay but all the tunes are Xerox copy of what Radhakrishna did in his Anand. And his lack of faculties are exposed in background music.
Bottom line
Despite many flaws, Godavari is good film. Especially it goes well with the family audiences and A center patrons. Shekar reaches his target audiences with this film.
