Movie Review: Akku

Akku, the three dotted vowel in Tamil linguistic system, is normally not used in casual pronounciation. Popularly called Ayutha Ezhuthu, the debutant director Maamani used the same as the title of his film. Since the word Ayutha Ezhuthu has already used as a film title, the director just use the single vowel as title for his film.

Akku is an experimental thriller in Tamil, which is only 90 minutes and features newcomers and has no songs, comedy, or fights! But still there is lot to enjoy in the movie. It has many good twists and turns that will keep you interested and on the edge of your seat! It seems that the director has been influenced by thrillers like Speed, and he reworks perfectly and presents with apt screenplay.

The story is very simple but with a novelty. Siva (Ajay) is an IT professional and an orphan, who falls in love with Bhanu (Sriji), whose brother (Rakshai) is a terrorist with hi-tec knowledge who is planning to bomb Chennai city! One day Siva and Bhanu elope, but are caught by this terrorist. Now he wants to destroy both the city as well as his sister's lover boy with a single bomb. He plants a shoe bomb on Siva and dumps him in the city center and asks him to start running and if he slows down it will explode and kills all the people near him!

Now Siva starts running through the city. Later the police come to know about the threat and chasing the boy to save him and the City. An Asst. Commissioner (Riyaz Khan) and bomb squad officer Anu (Anu Hassan) try their best to defuse the bomb. How the bomb is defused after a lot of twists is the rest of the story.

Surely Akku is a different approach like a Hollywood thriller and a bold and daring attempt of Maamani for a Tamil viewer. If you go to the movie without any expectation, you can enjoy the film with the racy treatment of the director.

Ajay has done his level best in his debut movie. He is fit for the role perfectly and really looks like an athlete. Rakshai is another notable debutant and it is sure that this guy will get a place in Tamil. Sriji also plays her role meaningfully.

Chittibabu, the cameraman is the real hero of the movie. His outstanding work provides the maximum tension to the viewers till the last scene of the movie.

No doubt, Maamani puts a starting mark (Pillayar Suzhi) for a good change in Tamil cinema trend.
