Movie Review: Thirutham Director: Ponraman
Cast: Hari Kumar, Priyanka, Mansi, Suja, Nasser, Adithya
Genre: Drama
In 'Thoothukudi', his debut film as a hero, Hari Kumar had taken on the role of an unkempt, brooding rowdy. In his second film, the dance choreographer-turned-actor takes on a role with various hues. But it seems to be a bit too much for the actor to handle.
The film opens with Karthik arriving in Bangalore to meet Priya, with whom he had a six-month online friendship. Karthik woos Priya and marries her. The morning after, sees a shocked Priya, as her newly-wedded groom had done the disappearing act and absconded with her jewels and money. Hot on his trail is policeman Saravanan (Adithya cuts a handsome picture here), who, however, narrowly misses Karthik each time thanks to those cinematic turns. Finally, getting to know of Karthik's modus operandi , Saravanan traps the conman in his own game. A trip to Ooty and Karthik's past, reveals the motive behind Karthik's actions.
As the dashing urban youth of the earlier scenes, and the moronic simpleton of the flashback episodes, Hari does go through most of the roles with easy assurance. But the complexity of the character, without the proper scenes to back it, does mar his performance at times. Like the psycho factor in Karthik's character, which is not brought out convincingly. Also, there are unanswered questions like how Karthik, a simpleton, became so computer savvy in such a short time.
But the film's main drawback is that it brings to mind various earlier films, like 'Naan Avan Illai', 'Manmathan' (sans the gory murders), and 'Kalyana Raman'. A bit too many to be rehashed in a coherent way!
Not much originality here, nor even a decent adaptation. More of a massacre than a rehash!
