Movie Review: Kadhalil Vizhunthen

A quoted title. It talks about ‘falling in love’ like this falling in a trap(or a swimming pool or a ditch)or something. And yes,it is another poor boy loving a rich girl,kaNdathum kAthal movie. But it is not just that.Nakul deserves a  .A movie could have gone wrong in a thousand ways. And this movie goes wrong in atleast nine hunderd wrong ways.Still,it has got hundred ways right and thats why I chose to write a review for the film. With so many debutants and the rest second or third-timers,making such an attempt in itself is applaudable.Be it the actors-Nakul and Sunaina(debut lead roles) or the director,to choose a script which is challenging and could prove disastrous is real courage.Completely shouldered on the ‘nAkka mukkA’ popularity, the movie released yesterday. But then don’t you to under-estimate the marketing strategy of SUN TV.*Spoilers ahead*

The story is simple and powerful. What really mattered was how they told it.There is this problem in Indian movies. The credits always show their double-dozen teeth saying ‘Story-Screenplay-Dialogues-Direction’ all equated to one guy.The very equation looks stupid. And they seem to mess up with atleast three departments. In this case,it is the screenplay and editing.Jigsaw is an interesting game to play. The puzzle becomes a menace when one piece is misplaced.Like the whole set of dominoes crashing and embarrassing us.Here, the director makes a ‘teknikael paalt’ of revealing a suspense just after the interval instead of bringing the audience to the edge of the seat. There we get this ‘eppadA padam mudiyum’ feeling.Unfortunately I don’t have this habit of ‘machAn vAdA oru dum-a pOttutu varuvOm’,which ultimately lands me in the position of watching (actually funny when watched on mute)dance movements,(supposedly ’saniyan pidicha’)build-ups and (wannabe spiderman)stunts after witnessing what the hell the whole thing is all about.Illogical and totally irrelevant stunts, except a few.Maybe the script was written with red ink-The directors of Tamil cinema have come to a consensus or are having this syndrome of making the first half romantic and second half violent. The acting is undoubtably superior than most thalapadhis.Nakul’s courage might be well rewarded with a string of movies coming in.And,the lead lady Sunaina doesn’t fail to impress as well.Costumes and locations were apt as well.Particularly the sets, mood and the ambience in the last act were amazing. However, the dialogues were a big let-down.Movie had references of Guna/Kadhal Konden/Nepali.But then, the story is pretty original. Thanks that it is not any telugu/hollywood flick for heavensake.

The music is again ‘inspired’.nAkka mukka is the sole reason why this movie is as popular as it is today.Rihanna’s unfaithful has been ripped off in ‘unakkena nAn’.The BGM(BackGround Music) is also heavily inspired and the worst of the lot is one part where 300’s soundtrack was cloned. The best picturised number was the immensely popular nAkka mukka(Vijay Antony’s version-singer+composer)and the worst was the completely unnecessary “puyalE” song with vulgar movements and ‘naansans’ costumes.Among the other songs,thOziyA en kAdhaliyA by Harish Raghavendhra/Vijay Antony is the pick of the album with beautiful lyrics like-

“alaigaL adithu maRaindhu vidum theevai pOl mAttikoNdEn

iRuthi chadangil adigaL padum poovai pOl kasangi vittEn”

The best part of the movie was the cinematography.Mindblowing shots by Vijay Milton kept me in awe and wonder-The climax shots, the rain sequence before the climax and the small surprises in the otherwiise ordinary scenes(like the angles when he drops the rose outside the coffee shop and stares inside.)It has become a custom since ‘enna kodumai saravaNan ithu!’ that a psychiatrist explains to someone(the audience, infact)about the disease the protagonist has and wanting to cure him.Whatever it is,the climax is very good however you see it.The music, camera, acting all bind and thankfully doesn’t give a ‘mokka mApLa’ fee.I would particularly like to congratulate SUN network for promoting the movie very well on all platforms.I live in Manipal, quite a remote place for Tamil movies like this which seldom or never release. It is remarkable to say that they have made it available for us,which is an achievement in itself.I’m sure the film will top the TV/Radio ratings and the fact that A.R.Rahman composed Sakkarakatti is not a competitor at all in front of the mighty SUN-backed up Kadhalil Vizunthen.Don’t be surprised if the film makes into the annual top ten as well, cause not even ten good films have released so far this year. So,the wrong jigsaw dismisses its cult stature, but then I watch movies for entertainment, also.

Movie Anatomy:
Acting-8/10 (Nakul, Sunaina, Livingston)
