Movie Review: Seval
"Seval" is normally associated with the announcement of day break. But director Hari's latest offering Seval puts you to sleep.
The movie begins in 2008 where Murugesan (Bharath) strolls out of the Palayamkottai jail after spending 17 years in it. Then flashback to 1991 where Murugesan slits the throat of '5 star' fame krishna and after a long chase by villagers he finds a place for him to hide. In his sleep there is another flashback to 1989 where the movie actually begins. Murugesan is shown as a carefree boy in sivasailam village. His parents (Rajesh and Yuvasri) are flower sellers and Thappal Thangavelu (Vadivelu) a postman forms his family. Murugesan and Thangavelu together come to an understanding that each one will carry post and flowers to the respective villages they visit. As things go by, we are introduced to Parijatham (Poonam) who is the daughter of Panjami Iyer (Y G Mahendiran) and her sister Gayathri (Simran).
Gayathri shares the family responsibility with her father and her aim is to help Parijatham settle in life and for the sake of it she even plans to defer her marriage. But on her fathers advice she gets married. The respectable village Periyvar (Sampath) who is an angry man at home but magnanimous outside has an eye for Parijatham. Murugesan begins to fall in love wih Parijatham. As things go by Murugesan gets to know that Periyavar has got an ill eye on Parijatham and comes to her rescue many a times.
When all goes fine and we wonder what is the twist in the tale, Gayathri gets pregnant and later she is diagnosed with blood cancer. The responsibility of bringing up the child falls on Parijatham and later she is also pushed to marry Gayathri's husband. There is also Krishna who is attracted to Parijatham and thats where her life becomes hell. Gayathri dies of cancer and adding to that Paritjatham's husband dies in an accident.
How cruel the world can be to an innocent girl and how she is being saved by the hero is being told in the rest of the movie.
Bharath has given a very mediocre performance, Newcomer Poonam does a commendable job in her first film. Simran has not got any major role to play and its quite difficult to understand why she had accepted to do such a role. Sampath after stellar performances in "Saroja" and "Kadhalil Vizhunthean" has not been utilized properly. Rest of the cast delivers very mediocre performances.
Music by G V Prakashkumar is too shallow. Hari's screenplay is dragging and we wonder if this is the man who gave racy hits like "Samy" and "Vel".
