For those who acclaimed Selvaraghavan as the most ace screenplay writer and filmmaker, you’ll have to confess your sins…. ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ is a very big disappointment. Sorry to say! Producer Ravendran maybe in a troublesome situation now…. We kindly thank those comments which supported in favor of us. Yes, we have been correct with our presumptions and Selva hasn’t done anything special other than ‘adult factors, semi-nude shots and bad words….’
‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ is a fiction that brings about conflict between the present generations of Chola and Pandian dynasty.
The film opens with a renowned archeologist (Prathap Pothan) found in an isolated land bounded with a nightmarish experience. On the very next day, the newspapers carry news that he’s missing. His only beloved daughter Lavanya (Andrea) an archeologist herself is desolated with the loss. Now, the forest officer Anitha (Reema Sen) with the aid of few ministers and higher police officials embark a journey to unleash the mystery behind archeologist.
They get an aid from local coolies lead by Muthu (Karthi). The trio Muthu-Anitha-Lavanya is into the deep forests along with police official and defense force.
Things are fine and adventurous till they approach the mysterious land where they’re taken into a different world of Chola Kingdom.
Yeah! The descendents of Chola Dynasty still exist ruled by the present king (Parthiban)…
With the running duration of 200mins, we are sure you will regret for expecting a lot from this film. How come the producer was so overconfident after reading the script? Selvaraghavan can be regarded as an arrogant and cocksure filmmaker, who cannot even think about a good concept.
Right throughout the first half, you’ll see dozens of filthy dialogues, guy and gals involved in physical touches. But we can’t understand how come audiences clap and whistle for certain sequences where Karthi pulls down his pants to get injected by Andrea.
Why do these three characters become insane as they enter the land of Chola Dynasty?
You’ll be left with so many questions as you walk out of theatres. Karthi does a best job by keeping us engrossed with his performance right throughout the show. Reema Sen being proclaimed as a descendent of Pandian dynasty is absurd. Selva should’ve tried roping in some Tamil speaking actresses. Andrea hasn’t got any role to perform while Azhagam Perumal is mediocre. Parthiban does nothing exceptionally other than dancing for couple of theme music. Especially watch his dance with Karthi before the penultimate sequences. Selvaraghavan seems to have been more confused in adding and deleting the canned shot during second half.
Songs aren’t really captivating. Except ‘Un Mela Aasadhan’, nothing seems to be good….. Cinematography gets diminished overdosed computer generated graphics. Each and everything in the frame is dominated by DI works. Even most of them tend to be amateurish with high toned grading.
Finally, ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ has no probabilities of surviving at box office more than 4 days. The theatres and multiplexes are lucky to certain extent as they have sold out tickets in advance while other single screens will have to accept the shocking truth – The film is an utter flop.
Bottom – Line: 3 years wait goes in Vain

we should applaud the director to have tried something radically different which we have never seen in tamil cinema
the war scenes the poor kingdom the suffering people were all so descriptive selva accurately passed his message to people that we should respect our history

The movie is a very good movie.Director Selvaraghavan has taken the Tamil film in the Hollywood style with our local history. it is a history oriented subject.The flim is a realistic and information oriented film.It is a huge try at right time.It is not a pass time movie.It is a movie for educated people of tamil orgin.It gives us the information about the accent used Chola Dynasty. As the director said go to movie without any expectation.It is feel good flim with information about chola dynasty and their way of living.I need to salute the whole crew for giving such a nice flim with full of information.The story is the hero of this flim and not the hero heroines.I really has to give applause for Rema sen acting.It is a heavy role and she delivered the output 100%. This film will rise lot of questions that is correct but the answers are with us. i believe is the only director after Kamala hassan who has the guts to prove this type heavy storyline.
Bottom line: Nice movie with lot of thinking has to be done by people.

I think this comment about Ayirathil Oruvan comes from a ‘Vijay’ or ‘Ajith’ fan or may be a mass movie fan……. i accept some of your points abt the movie but as a Tamil movie lover i feel the movie is great….. For how many years will you expect good words, unrealistic human feelings(love making) in an Indian Movie…… I have just seen the other side of the coin…..

If this movie is considered as Damp squib ,I guess this guy doesn’t seem to have experienced whole lot of hollywood movies on the genre of expedition(more than adventure)
Of course, the 1st half-an-hour could have been more Precise & there could be subtitle for certain scenes , But that doesn’t mean you can’t take a lot out of this movie.

Excellent movie and Excellent entertainer with food for our thoughts. It made us to feel like watching a hollywood film. Films of this type should be encouraged for the welfare of tamil cinema. Otherwise below average commercial films like vettaikaran,kutty will dominate the tamil industry.

Your review is 100% correct. I was eagerly waited for this film and after seeing this film, now got very big disappointment. Though we can accept the 1st half for being a different one, the 2nd half is waste.

I am really sad to see such a discouraging review of AO. Selva has attempted something which tamil cinema has never before attempted. Its high time for indians to decide if they wanna stick to masala and redundant movie like villu and vettaikaaran which only bang on commercial or to appreciate movies like AO.

Very precisely written review of AO. Selva must be nuts to make a movie of this magnitude without paying attention to execution or clarity in the second half. First half is good (oops, except those vulgar dialogues) it just makes you wonder what is going to unfold, but alas, they drop you down the ditches in the second half. You might think how did we land here?!!
Story jumps here and there, shows the director was confused in making the movie.
Selva wanted lot of new departments, he forgot the most important of all, Script Writing. While the story line was good, script execution was utter flop.
Totally incoherent, lack of proper execution, characters dont strike a chord, useless experimentation — are major lags of this movie. Way too much hype and they forgot to hire an editor! Dont boast way too overboard, this is what the result is!
They might say they it is box office hit after a week or so, yeah right!!! (wonder if it would run that long!)
Only warmer is Karthi performance.

it has been ages we waited for this. A movie that tells true feelings not the fake love , nalavan and kettavan scene. stop it we have enuff of that
being a tamil who lives outside of tamil nadu o grew up watching all language film including thai and chinese

I think the review is correct… In the second half the director has totally spoilt the dgnity of two ancient tamilian dynastys
(chozhas and the pandavas).. Tamil dynasty was one of the civilized kingdom, when rest of the world were not even civilized.. But the way director has portrayed current pandian dynasty, is too pathetic. Jus because you want a villain in the film, you cannot take the history in hands and add all imaginary stuff into it.. This is such a sensible topic and director has handled it without sufficient research on the history and without having enouh respect for the history.. We cannot claim ourselves a good tamilian by accepting what the film says is correct and good..
Please recheck on wht u said about aayirathil oruvan … the movie is a superb movie … y can u tamilians get adopted to these kind of films … these fils are goin to bring our films to the international arena …. u indian movie viewers need to grow up … chears for selvaragavan for givin a gud film …

The movie is on the whole a very different story in the middle of all these commercial films but as everyone feels Selva must have concentrated on dialogues and especially screenplay and those vulgar parts also the end is absurd and leaves the viewer in dismay and annoys him and many scenes are a copy from 300,Mackenna’s Gold logic is also missing in some places

First of all we should give a standing applaud to the director for trying something new which the tamil cinema industry have never seen before… According to the story the people are going to search for the Cholas and Andrea accompanied them for bronging back her father… Karthi and his guys were taken as helpers… Inorder to reach the Cholas they have to cross the 7 traps and they finally reached there cholas place with some deaths in those traps… Actually Reema heve come there to get the Pandiya’s deity statues back to them as she belongs o Pandians and none among the gang knows about her except some of pandiyas in tat gang… In 1st half some of the vulgar words used by karthi is to show tat he purely belongs to a slum and the director wants to insist that mainly… And then the conversation between Reema and Andrea is vulgar in order to show their anger on each other and once again the director is insisting their anger clearly… In the Second half after intro of Parthiban, the people will not be allowed to have food… Then a lady with a baby in her hand enters and presses her breast… From her breast instead of milk blood will be coming… this shows that how the people are starving for food for many days or even months… Then the story proceeds with entry of those 3 persons to the chola… and reema will be married to Parthiban as she bluffs to them like she belongs to Cholas by showing a Tiger mark on her back… then karthi will also join them by killing a man like beast… then reema steals the Pandian’s statue and runs out and calls for military and other pandiyas to kill the cholas…finally all cholas will be killed except Karthi, andrea and Pathiban’s son… Here the director finishes the movie in a way that there is a 2nd part coming for us… The director showed us the real world of cholas and pandiyas through the film…
It is our view in seeing the film… We must just see the story and the characters… those vulgarity shows tat they are completely living as those character… If we see the film with eyes of vulgarity, we will feel that only… Its our eyes and heart which longs for vulgarity… I once again say that watch the film with a story minded and not with vulgarity… No one in this world is uncorrupted…

In hollywood we use a word called ” mixed reviews”..For the first time in indian films we see a mixed review situation by the critics…that means this movie cannot be judged by reading the reviews , everyone have to watch it and feel the synopsis and relate to their thoughts.. definetly this movie is not of our (tamil) kind. it requires a lot of thought process, confidence,restless research work, and it definetly shows on the film, and i dont thnk any one here can even attempt such thing other than selva ragavan, reema sen has done a tremendous role, camera is really awesome , G.V Prakash has done a very good score on the background music., u jus cant imagine such movie here..hats off to the team and i am expecting.AYIRATHIL ORUVAN PART II. the review posted over here is comletely stuid lease donot consider this

such a false review of a marvelous movie!! it was sometime that i did not see any movie in tamil cinema…!!! It was something very different among the same boring film scripts which flood these days !! Of course, minor mistakes are seen clearly but the aim and the moral of the film is awesome…!! I was so very interested in watching the movie because I could not imagine what the next move or scene would be.. They buy tickets and they have all the rights to enjoy the way they want (as long as they dont bug others).
And remember dear idiotic reviewers, just using few technical power words like “cinematography”, “screenplay” etc doesnt put u anyway ahead of the normal audience who are anyway far advanced from you. Give a camera, money, dates from great heros and heroines, these jokers cant even take a still photography of them but look at the way they comment…

Now a days it seems people with a website can write anything in their review.It’s better people like u don’t write reviews.How many days will you watch heroes fighting with villans and romancing heroines.If u say there is vulgar in this film, then i can point out many movies in tamil that had worst double meaning dialogs and starring some of the current leading actors.This is the first step in tamil movies like adventure and fantasy and we must welcome more movies like this…If u want masala movies then u watch only ajith and vijay films…u people then only can watch others getting oscars, we have to try something in world class man…
This was really a disaapointing movie. Selva wants to screw up kartiks career. Though the story line is good but we need lot of patience to watch this movie. First half is ok but the second half is disappointment and the climax screwed.
Selva shuld have asked dhanush to act in this movie. Though Kathik was said to be a hero he is a dummy in this movie.
We need to appreciate the research that has been made for the movie. The anciet tamil dialogues needs to be appreciated.
But the fight between cholas and modern army gives lot of negative energy in the climax.
